How do I start a business?
Starting a business, or changing careers, feels overwhelming when you begin with everything you do not know yet. Begin instead with the day you serve your first customer or start the new role, then work backward to today.
Work backward in five steps
Picture the result
Decide what you will sell and to whom. If you are changing careers, read real job listings and name the role you want.
Choose a deadline
Pick the date you want to open, make a first sale, or start applying. A date turns a someday idea into a schedule.
Test before you spend
Talk with potential customers, or people already doing the job. Their answers will change your plan.
Handle the setup
Check your state’s registration requirements and arrange banking and bookkeeping. For a career move, close your biggest skill gap.
Ask directly
Ask people to buy, or send targeted applications. Early real conversations teach more than another month of preparation.
Where people get stuck
The common trap is polishing a logo or a resume before anyone has said yes. Put the first real conversation early in your plan.
